How do I format transcripts?

Transcripts are written in a screenplay writing format called Fountain. The fountain website has a quick how to of how fountain formatting is interpreted as well as complete syntax overview.

For the purposes of this website the following are the most important formatting elements:

Scene headings

Scene headings are written in all capital letters, starting with INT. or EXT. followed by an empty line.

INT. STARS HOLLOW: LORELAI'S HOUSE, LIVING ROOM - DAY

Some action.

Additionally scene headings should be structured in the following way:

  1. A location indicator of either INT. or EXT.
  2. A general location, e.g. STARS HOLLOW
  3. A colon :
  4. A more specific location, e.g. LORELAI'S HOUSE
  5. A comma ,
  6. An even more specific location, e.g. LIVING ROOM
  7. A dash -
  8. A daytime indicator of either DAY or NIGHT

Character names

Character names are written in all capital letters on a single line. Example:

LORELAI
Oy, with the poodles already!

Dialogue

Dialogue is written directly after a character name without an empty line inbetween. Example:

LORELAI
Oy, with the poodles already!

Action

Action is basically anything that isn't a scene heading, character name or dialogue. Example:

INT. STARS HOLLOW: LORELAI'S HOUSE, LIVING ROOM

Some action.
